a midsummer night’s dream
by William Shakespeare.
Directed by David Evans.
Friday, 13th - Saturday, 21st June
This has to be the most famous of all
Shakespeare's plays and the most accessible. Full of magical charm and
enormous humour with a list of familiar characters that we all love to
see again and again. Set in Athens on the eve of the Royal nuptials
between the Duke Theseus and the Amazon Queen, Hippolyta, an argument between four lovers sets us off on a wild
'Dream' adventure in the forest, all witnessed and controlled by Oberon, the King of
Fairyland and his henchman, Puck as they and we revel in the misfortunes of the
mortals. Into this mayhem enter the honest working men and women of
Athens who have written their own entertainment to present to the Duke
on his wedding night. Their inadvertent involvement in Oberon's
argument with Titania, his Queen of Fairyland, leads to greater hilarity as poor Nick Bottom becomes
transformed by Puck into a creature of our dreams - or maybe
nightmares! All is resolved when Oberon gets his way and the wedding
celebrations are crowned by the workers entertainment.
Grab your tickets while you can, for this is
guaranteed to be one of the most popular shows of our 70th Anniversary
Season. This magical, hilarious, 'sex on legs' spectacle will enchant
you - and remember, our last night is Midsummer's Night!
