come back to the 5 & dime, jimmy dean, jimmy
dean
a comedy-drama by Ed Graczyk.
Directed by Paul Johnson.
Friday, 16th - Saturday, 24nd May
A change to May’s production personnel
means that Paul Johnson will now be directing Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean for us.
If you were lucky enough to get early tickets for
2008’s curtain-raiser, the riotous Noises
Off - before it sold out - then you
will already know that ‘Jimmy Dean’ is in very safe hands
and you’ll be looking forward to this comedy-drama with bated
breath.
Set in a 5 & Dime store in sun-baked
McCarthy, Texas, preparations are well underway for the twentieth
anniversary reunion of the ‘Disciples of James Dean’
...twenty years to the day since their idol’s untimely death.
Mona, the ‘Disciples’ leader, still
works in the store, still worships Dean and still lives her life around
her memories of working as an ‘extra’ on the set of
‘Giant’ in the nearby town of Marfa (the movie James Dean
made with Elizabeth Taylor) ...Mona’s son, Jimmy Dean, was born exactly
nine months later! James Dean’s son and heir?
Sissy, owner of the most popular
‘pair’ in town, also still works in McCarthy and, through
flash-backs, we see the girls, together with their best friend, Joe, as
they were at the height of the Disciples’ fever-pitch excitement
twenty years earlier.
Mona has organised the reunion, but will the
disciples all turn up? and will they even still recognise each other?
Prepare to laugh and cry as secrets are uncovered
and truths revealed.
Also starring Sandy Dennis, Karen Black and Kathy
Bates, this was the play that gave ‘Cher’ her big acting
break in 1982, appearing first on Broadway (directed by Robert Altman)
and subsequently in the film version of the same year.
A brilliant and popular play that will certainly
sell-out at BLT fast (Noises Off sold out before its opening night!), the only question
is ...will you book quick enough to guarantee a seat? Why not simply
order your tickets online here and now?
